Creating Freedom

Concept for installations using meanings of the word “Freedom”

Installation #1

The word FREEDOM would be built of white plexi-glass or white no-seem nylon on wire frame. Letters 5’tall, depth 2.5’ with width the length of the seven letters that make up the word. From the inside there will be projections of people in each letter. One person per letter, both front and back positioned in the front and back of each letter. The images would change. There would be a broad cross-section of people represented in the images, ranging from young to old, black and white, ethnic variations, rich, poor, ugly and beautiful. The images will look like they are trapped in each letter.

Installation #2

Variation on #1: Create word out of metal bars, like a jail with the depth of the letters being solid black metal. Stuck to the inside of the letter depth metal plating, the words of the Charter of Rights or the Declaration of Independence, typed on white paper. Glued on like banners glued to poles in the city, messy, overlapping, but readable. The jail or word can be entered in to at the beginning panel of the letter “F”. You can read the papers while inside the letters. You will experience the feeling of imprisonment, and the short height will cause most to crouch uncomfortably.

Installation #3

Create sound proof, lightproof booth, large enough o fit a large person, 3.5’x3.5’ roughly. As the person enters the booth and closes the door, an announcer starts toe read the Charter of Rights, or the Declaration of Independence, in an authoritative, “voice of God” tone. As this starts to be read, slowly, quietly, the sound of boomer jets starts to come toward you. Followed by sounds of explosions, bullets, pelting, screams, cries, all the while, the “voice of Gad” repeats speeches where war was justified in the name of Freedom, for example: President Truman’s famous speech announcing the dropping of the H boom on Japan in the name of Freedom
